Myths of Atheism
Description: Some of the basic claims of atheistic world view like those concerning the eternal existence of matter, the endlessness and eternal existence of universe, the unlimited cognitive power of science and others are compared with the Christian belief and are examined in the light of modern scientific discoveries including the Elementary Particle Physics Quantum Mechanics, Quantum Electrodynamics, Quantum Chromo Dynamics, General Theory of Relativity and Cosmology. The modern science disqualifies these pillars of atheistic worldview to be mere myths.
Myths to be discussed in lecture
Matter is eternal.
Discussion:
- Violation of the Law of matter conservation,
- The Law of matter and energy conservation, borders of validity,
- Annihilation and creation of matter
Universe is eternal.
Discussion:
- The second thermodynamic law
- Expansion of universe
- Big Bang
- Dark matter
Science shall know everything.
Discussion:
- "Do not exist things unknowable, only unknown?“
- Theory of relativity – space-time events outside the light cone
- Uncertainty relation of QM
- Uncertainty in classical mechanics
Science has proved that God does not exist.
Discussion:
- Nature of science,
- Subject of science,
- Subject of faith,
- Nature of scientific proof,
- Do not know of a single proof
Other related myths
1) Science is reliable.
Discussion:
- Nature of scientific proof, (Assumption, Hypothesis, Theory)
- Objectivity of scientific proof (Need for space-time invariance + observer invariance)
- The validity of scientific proof
- The way new knowledge is attained
- Goedel’s proof
2) Matter is pre-dominant to conscience.
Discussion:
- The inner quality of man can be improved only by improving society.
- The communist society will produce new man with better character.
3) Science shall cause that the Church shall seas to exist.
Discussion:
- Means to reach the aim,
- Historical experience,
4) Reason and faith do not come together.
Discussion:
- Common nature of faith
- Faith in science (natural, exact, example – mathematics)
- Reason in mystical experiences (Moses, Paul)
- Attitudes of reason and faith (various, biblical)
5) Bible is a book of myths
Discussion:
- Archeology
- Biblical prophecies
- Mathematical probability of natural fulfillment
6) Christian experience has nothing with reality
Discussion:
- The ways of knowing reality (role of authority and/or of science)
- Levels of interaction (me and me, me and nature, me and you)
- Parallels of scientific and Christian ways of knowing the truth
